Coaches & Referees Code of Conduct

Upward Basketball depends on volunteer Coaches/Referees involvement.  Be a part of one of the greatest youth sports leagues in the Greenville community - Volunteer with Jarvis & St. James Upward Basketball League as a Coach and/or Referee.  The coach is the key component to fulfilling the mission of Upward. This entire mission is in the hands of you, the coach, at practices and games.

In Upward Basketball, the success of the coach is not based on wins and losses. The success of a coach is characterized by how he or she conveys Christ in actions and attitude on and off the court as well has how he or she teaches and encourages within the sport of basketball.

1. RESPECT - I will place the emotional, spiritual and physical well-being of my players ahead of any personal desire:

• Use appropriate language and tone when interacting with players, league officials, game officials, parents, and spectators.

• Treat all players, league officials, game officials, parents, and spectators with dignity and respect.

• Include all players in team activities without regard to race, religion, gender, or ability/disability.

2. CARING - I will treat each player as an individual, keeping in mind the wide range of emotional and physical development possible with any given age group:
  • Recognize that each child develops at a different pace and demonstrate concern for his/her individual needs and well-being.
  • Encourage all players, regardless of skill level, to be included as team members and remain involved in sports.
I will do my best to provide a safe environment for my players to play and learn basketball:
• Ensure that players are never left unsupervised, including before or after practice and games.
I will do my best to be prepared and organize practices that are fun and challenging for all my players.
• Become knowledgeable, accepting, and supportive of all applicable game rules, league rules, regulations, and policies:
• Teach players these rules and necessitate compliance.
• Conduct the required 6-8 minute devotional time at each practice.
• Do my best to connect to the players on my team on other levels besides athletics.
I will lead by example in demonstrating fair play and good sportsmanship to all my players, while using appropriate coaching techniques to teach my players the skills of the game:
• Use the position of coach to promote, teach, demonstrate, and expect good sportsmanship and fair play.
• Provide an environment conducive to fair and equitable competition.
• Maintain a positive, helpful, supportive, and Christ-like attitude.
• Exercise my authority/influence to control the behavior of spectators & parents by showing grace and respect to all.
• Accept, support, and adhere to all league rules and policies set forth by Upward and members of the leadership team.
• Fulfill the expected role of a youth coach to adopt a “children first” philosophy.
• Allow and encourage players to listen, learn, and play hard within the rules.
• Place the emphasis on fun and participation.
• Discourage illegal contact, or intentionally dangerous play, and teach positive defensive methods instead.
• Exhibit gracious acceptance of defeat or victory.
I will not engage in any activity that will compromise my ability to be an effective leader:
• Refrain from use, possession, or influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while coaching or attending all activities sponsored by Upward Basketball.
